What model? I have the SW6DE and had to replace the switch. It was rather easy to do. Pry it out with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the wires from the old and connect them to the new switch. Slip the switch back in.
The water heater doesn't have to be removed but you'll probably need to disconnect any gas lines or the burner tube if they're in the way.
