If the controller has battery voltage sense wires the above statement becomes false. Being close does save money on wire.

If the controller is PWM, which HB leans towards, as long as the wire from the panels to the controller has enough ampacity to legally carry the load, wire size does not matter. In other words, "go a little bigger", is a total waste of your hard earned cash.
If, on the other hand, the controller is MPPT, then bigger is desirable.
A very few folks, such as 2oldman, have jumped to 24 volt battery banks. It does add a layer of complexity to the system--but so far those that have done so are quite happy with their results.
