Refrigerator Fault Code L1

We are getting a fault code of L1 on our Norcold refrigerator. According to owners manual this must be serviced by a dealer. Any one had experience in getting this fixed. Is a dealer required to fix it?
  • I take it you have a Norcold 1200 series fridge.
The L1 fault code is a 'high temp limit switch--open'

IF you have had the recall done (control module and new high temp sensor install)
you will have a RED led light ON the control module box (located via outside compartment lower access panel)
    RED led light on means:
You had a high temp excursion (>700*F)
    OR
    the recall box has failed.
Both will will trip power to fridge

Either case...call Norcold and have tech test/evaluate/repair.
If box has failed..new box free (except for service call charge)

If you have NOT had the recall done......call Norcold and get the recall installed
The OEM temp sensor is located in lower section of burner chamber (lower left side of fridge). It trips open if temps exceed 300*F (can't remember exact temp.
It may be resettable type......small button in center

High temp trip.....either OEM or recall......are not something to ignore/bypass etc.
Chances are you have recall and IT has failed........but what if it was an actual high temp trip

That L1 fault could also be from:
Off level operation (accumulative damage.....causing blockage)
Insufficient, obstructed or downdraft ventilation (could be failed cooling fans)
Heat deflector cap blocking ventilation (top vent blocked with debris etc.)
    Cooling system (failed)

  • We had an L1OP fault on our Norcold last summer. It was 112 degrees outside. We called a technician and he told us to open the back of the fridge and see if the red light was on on the black box. It was. Told us to place a magnet under the red light. We did and the light went off and the fridge started working and has worked now for 8 months with no problem. A friend of ours had the same problem, took the RV in and they also did the magnet trick. Try that.
