Thanks to all who have commented, and thanks for the manual link!
The burner is brand new -- I had thought it might be the problem.
I did run a wire up in the stack and rattle the baffle around, hardly any soot at all came out.
At this point I'm perplexed why it doesn't cool on propane, since it does cool nicely on 110v. Could it be an electronics problem? Or?
I'm not sure what to look into next. Any suggestions, anyone?
