Refrigerator Problem

Less than 1 year old Dometic RML 8555 (propane, 12v, 120v) never a cooling problem in previous 5 or 6 trips in central TX. Took a trip to northern New Mexico, no problems on propane during the 2-3 day trip but once at 8100 ft elevation, after about 18 hrs, fridge began to beep indicating not cooling. Thought the jet was dirty, shut of fridge for about 1.5 hrs to clean jet. Turned back on propane and worked for about 1.5 hrs then began to beep again. Put on 12 volt and went back to major town (6450 elevation) and after about 30-45 min. of a 1 hr drive, beeping stopped (indicating fridge cooling). Switched back to gas and drove to another campground (7700 ft elev.) while still on gas and after about 18 hrs at 7700 ft, fridge began to beep. Switched to 120v for 5 min but still beeping, switched to 12v still beeping. Turned off fridge for 30 min., then back on to gas, beeping stopped and began cooling. Went back to campground at 8100 ft stayed for about 18 hr. without any problem on gas. Drove to another campground (7500 ft elev.)and after about 6 hrs fridge began to beep. Turned fridge off for 30 min, back on gas began to beep. Switched off a couple more times for 30 min, then began to cool on gas. Decided to head home the next morning and had no problem on gas for the next 2-3 days on gas at lower elevation.

My initial thought was that the circuit board may be overheating and turning off for 1/2 to 1 hr allowed it to cool and start working again. But wondered whether at the elevations we were at (7500-8100 ft)if the propane regulator could be the problem rather than an electronic problem. I have never had a propane fridge problem at these elevations before but would like to get opinions from people who camp at these elevations on a more regular basis.

Sorry for the long post.

Mike

  • I got confirmation from Dometic that this fridge should operate without problems up to 9000 ft elevation on propane. I checked the propane pressure in central TX (about 800 ft elevation)and it gave 11-11.5 inches of water which is within specifications. So it appears that my propane regulator may not be putting out the correct pressure at elevations above 6000 ft. Existing regulator is a Marshall Gas Control Model 299 which is very cheap.

Any suggestions on a higher quality gas regulator that might work better at higher altitudes?
  • I did see this in the manual but took it to mean it might be more difficult to get it light at higher elevations, not that it would not work at higher elevations. I have had other Dometic fridges and never had problems with them at these elevations. If this model is meant to be used only at altitudes of less than 3300 ft them it makes it almost worthless for use in an RV.

It did not give any error code, only the "GAS" LED flashed and the fridge beeped.

Any idea if a different gas regulator would improve its operation at higher elevations?

    Thanks,
    Mike
  • This is from the manual for your refer. Also, when it faults does it show a code? Doug

For physical reasons, gas ignition faults
could occur starting from an altitude above
sea level of approx. 3280 ft. / 1000 m (No
    malfunction!)
