Relocating vent fan switch

The switch for the bathroom vent fan is located up inside the ceiling vent. Being vertically challenged, my wife cannot reach it.

How can I put a switch on the wall and, how would you conceal the wiring?

  • I thought about changing my switch too, but then realized I have to reach up and turn the crank anyway. So why bother.
  • I installed a double switch in the wall for the exhaust fan and the light in the bathroom. The switch on the fan, I used to turn on or off a 7 Ohm resistor for the fan to give it a two speed operation.

Work involved taking one of the wall panels in the bathroom off, and drilling a hole in the top of the wall to connect to a channel in the ceilling that led to the fan and light wiring. While I was at it, I installed a recessed toilet paper holder in the same wall.

    Very happy with the results,

  • I relocated mine by running the wire above the ceiling over to a cabinet. Ran the wire inside the cabinet in the corner. I installed the switch in the bottom of the cabinet. No wire visible and everyone could reach the switch.
  • Wiremold makes a stick on surface raceway for problems like that. Last I knew Lowes have some, maybe someone at Lowes can help you with the parts.

  • Can you replace the switch with one that uses a pull chain/string?
  • Knowing and understanding how these things are built, I can say it would be difficult to gain access to the area required to hide the wires in the wall and ceiling.

The goal would be to get a wire from the fan over to the wall and down. Biggest problem is getting a hole through the top of the wall, inside the wall, into the ceiling and fishing a wire.

About the only way would be to pull a panel loose from the wall so you can reach up and drill a hole into the ceiling cavity. From there you would have to fish a wire over to the fan.

If that sounds like too much work and effort, why not consider changing the fan out to a Fantastic Fan, Model 6600R/417. This fan comes with a remote so you could have it anywhere. And you will have a fan far superior to anything that the standard RV guys install.
