On the 2/3 way question: I agree, the DC option is not that great draws way too much power and may not work all that well.
I'm not sure if I'd replace the entire thing or just the cooling unit but.. If your reaons for wanting 3-way is you do not like using propane.... Consider this.
Both Norcold and Dometic make compressor driven high effiency units, these draw so much power that when you open the door and the light comes on consumption goes up 50%, (That is to say they draw less than 50 watts). 120/12 volt only. I have a freezer using the same technology beside me as I type, I do not even bother with the 120 volt option less the 12 volt fails (Which it has due to a bad wire or connection in the feed line for the socket it is plugged into).
