Replacement Battery Charger - recommendation(s)

Even all -

I have an old vectron 1093 that I've had for years and it's serving me well. Unfortunately, they are not being manufactured any more.

My young cousin is just starting out camping in a TC he purchased for a song and the only charger he has is an "inexpensive" maintainer

I'm going out on a limb, but I'll bet he'll end up with a set of GC's and will need a way to recharge them when he gets home to full top them off.

What manufacturer/model do you recommend - and keep in mind, he's young, and price sensitive.

Thanks so much in advance

Josh
  • Actually the Boondocker is a great value for 35 amps and will charge just fine. You can add some wire leads and clamps if it must be portable. Although not designed to be out in the weather it would have to stay under the shell.

Does he charge with a generator? How big? Need 2000 watts to power a large charger to get a fast charge into 2 batteries. A 1000 watt would power maybe 35/40 amps max.

For plugged in at home I recommend 10 amps minimum. Do you want a sealed unit to set in the mud and let run overnight in the rain?

Here are a few to look at:

  • Time - his TC is just a shell.

Last summer I went up and taught him to fish (wiring, electrical, plumbing).
At this point, he's got a starter battery, a wiring harness (which I showed him how to wire from).

We added a small sink to wash his face in (and an easly swappable 5 gallon drinking water jug) - oddly enough it came with a solar panel and a charge controller (which we wired in).

But - he's reaching the point where his starter battery is failing and he can't fully recharge the battery because his charger is a trickle charger - hence my question.

He'll never have a "typical" TC with a fridge, a power distribution panel and a converter (120v to 12v) like most of us have.

If he had a vectron or something of that class, it would last him a lifetime. Add a couple of GC batteries and he'd have power for days.
  • i love the Vector 1093

i really don't know what to recommend that is currently available
