Replacing a 55 amp converter with a 45?

MY new trailer came with a WFCO 55 amp converter. My old trailer has a Progressive Dynamics 45 amp converter with a charge wizard. I want put the PD unit in my new trailer and the WFCO in my old. Should I be concerned that there is 10 amps less in my new trailer? My new trailer is LED lighting through out, so I'm guessing the average DC load is less. What say you, folks?

Thanks

  • Do it- the 45 amp PD will do a much better job than the 55 amp WFCO, it will charge faster and better, despite the 10 amp "rated" difference.
  • If you have a single battery and don't dry camp then the 45A will be OK. But if you have dual batteries and use a generator to keep the batteries charged I'd go 55A or better.
I have a 55A deck-mount Iota mounted converter mounted to the ceiling of the pass-through. Better than the WFCO for charging off a generator and it's a 3' run to the batteries.
  • My WFCO 55a died so I replaced it with a PD9270. My understanding was that you only needed to change wire gauge if you went with the 9280. My reason in going higher was the charge wizard and the higher amperage would help charging my four GC's a bit. I moved the converter within 2' of the battery bank with 4ga and tied in to the house DC with existing 6ga. Seems to work great. I don't think I would go down.
  • I have a 35 amp replacing my 55 amp, works fine.
Now with solar I don't use it much.

Yes the PD 45 amp will work better in so many ways than the WFCO 55.

never go down you can go up by 5 amps and get a pd 60amp

    Why?
  • I can't think of any reason that 10a diff would matter on shore power to run the rig. The Charge Wizard PD would be an advantage over the WFCO for battery charging in some situations too.
