Hi Mex,
If the voltage at the end of the 70 feet was not too high for the controller I'd do it, just to save on wire costs.
#14 wire at 70 feet at 8.8 amps yields a voltage drop of 20% with 36 volts at the panel end, and 28.8 at the controller end.
