Replacing Electric Step Motor

I'm replacing my motor on the electric steps and it's a Stromberg Carlson Lippert part # SP1636669. My question is when you replace the motor do I need to have the steps fully extended, retracted, or does it matter? I've tried to Google it, but no luck. Thank you.
