I think that most rvers that viewed this post do not really care about all the technical terms and so. I really believe that want to know why there are alot of st tire failures and very few lt tire failures and also they would like to be given a little direction as to what they should buy on their next tire purchase.
What if I had a trailer that weighed equal on all four tires and it weighed in at 12,000 pounds. Would 4 ST tires that were rated at 3450 each be better than if I had 4 LT tires that were rated at 3042 each?
I still believe that LT tires are superior to ST tires.
This gets to the crux of what I keep begging for. The ST tire you are looking at and the LT tire you are looking at might actually be the same tire -- just swap the "S" for "L" and "3450" for "3042" in the mold. But I can't confirm this myself because I don't have the actual values for K in that formula. There is one value used when they "put the S and 3450" in the mold, and another when they "put the L and 3042" in the mold, if you will (note: I am not stating this is exactly what they do or that they are definitely exactly the same tire).
Think about it -- you could build tires this way -- but you would end up with some "odd sized" LT or ST tires (note you just don't see LT and ST tires of exactly the same size on the market).
You need to go to a tire store and handle a good quality LT and then one of the bunch of 35 pound ST's!! They are not the same at all. Maxxis is the only ST manufacturer that builds a ST that might be comparable to a LT tire in construction. However they still have the baseball profile.
Come walk through the park with me. You can tell which trailers have ST tires and which have LT tires just by the shape of them without leaving the street.
BTW the Mission name is 6 feet under along with many of the failed tires. Chris
