You know, there may be something that we actually COULD do...
Rather than concentrate on reporting past failures, we could complain about non compliance with the standard wherever we detect it- whether we own the rig or not.
I'm thinking along the lines of looking at the actual equipment here and there, as Fasteagle has done, then reporting any "discrepancies" to the NHTSA...
Might not do anybody any good that already owns a trailer, but at least we'd be contributing to a database for future owners!
I know from personal experience NHTSA does require trailer manufacturers to have accurate placard info. (Harbor Freight utility trailer had wrong info and manufacturer was required to provide new sticker to all owners)
Now for a moment think what would happen if someone provided photo of placard that was not in compliance. NHTSA would probably order a recall which would require the mfg provide new placards (unless the RV mfg was out of business which happened in a second case which I personally reported to NHTSA last year).
Now you happen to own a trailer and get a new placard that cuts a few hundred pounds out of your capacity. Would be interesting to see what the mfg would do if you demanded the mfg provide the parts (or the money to compensate you for the cost) needed to get the capacity you paid for.
Do the words "Small Clames Court" or Class Action suit mean anything to you?
Information on where and how to file an official claim of defect is in my Jan blog post if you need it or FE can provide the info on his site.
