Thanks! Good replies from all. I'm out "camping" at the moment and not able to try anything yet. Although it had been years (almost decades!) since I did any building I'm pretty sure that a search of the junk box will turn up a .1 disc ceramic or two. I think I will have to buy the chokes and or toroids but I may have a couple somewhere.
I'm pretty sure the rfi is radiated since I get in in the car AM as I drive by.
The output of the controller is connected to the batteries where the original converter was connected, under the stove (!) with about 8 feet of #10 then 15-20 feet of #6 from there to the batteries (4 GCs). I had been thinking that the batteries provided a pretty good capacitor but as I typed this I realised that 20+ feet of wire make a pretty good antenna! I guess a choke and/or capacitors at the output would be a good idea!
Can any one suggest whether or not a few turns of the #8 from the panels through a toroid core would provide enough inductance? I know that toroid cores come in a wide range of values, how do I calculate or guess what I need, or should just go with what comes to hand?
I hope to start messing with this early next week.
