RFI from Blue Sky MPPT controller. Choke or ?

Hi to the ham radio and other rfi tech types:

My mppt controller is creating a lot of rfi. Very noisy on AM broadcast band and all the HF bands through 10 meters on SSB or CW

The noise increases with current. None at night. I am thinking of wrapping a few turns of the wires from the panels around (through) a toroid cored or the square snap on choke cores I used to see at Radio Shack. Or would a couple of these work as well or better?

I have enough slack and room to work right at the controller input. Can't shield the controller for fear of allowing it to overheat.

Thoughts? suggestions?

Thanks

  • If the toroids don't work, you could place a Faraday cage around the controller. These can be made from screen so that you get airflow.
  • Art,

Try one of those RS chokes on the output side of the controller.
If that doesn't stop the garbage, put one on the input side also.

While you are at RS pick up a few 0.1µF ceramic chip capacitors; you may need those also.
