Phil, 24v mono's can be pretty big and heavy. Two as a suitcase could be rather hard to manage. Just something to consider.
But yes, going 24v will decrease wire size. Mex pointed out to me the idea of going 12v in series, and bucking the voltage at the panels with a gizmo. That may be a viable way for you to go? I mainly went with heavy (6ga welding) cable, in hopes of it being more durable in the long term, and to accommodate going 12v in parallel.
