Roof AC

When I turn on my front ac the blower and compressor come on. After a short time (5 min) the compressor goes off but the insider blower continues to run. What could be the problem? They have always come on and off at the same time in the past.

Absolutely! It seems that your particular Rooftop A/C has separate motors for its Indoor (Evaporator "Cold") Coil and its Outdoor (Condenser "Hot") Coil. If it can't get rid of the heat that it's removed from Inside, then it'll overheat Outside.

Most of us think of an A/C that's more like their own than one that's different. The majority have a compressor and ONE motor up there. That one motor has a squirrel cage on the front end for Indoor Evaporator Blower and a blade on the back end for Outdoor Condenser Fan. So we would have ruled "fan motor not running" as a cause.

You should have access to at least one end of that motor shaft. Try some oil on it. Any kind but ideally not WD40 since it doesn't stay around long. I like "Turbine Oil" often called "Zoom Spout." Great for appliance motors!

HEY EVERYBODY!!! When you ask for help, be as specific as you can! Get Make/Model/Year or as much of it as you can. The generator gurus have about abandoned us because people say "my generator" when it's essential to a tech to have Model and Spec Code. Likewise for A/C... Make Model, Ducted or Non-Ducted, Wall Thermostat, which Kind. This is far more important than Brand of RV that it's in, until you get to matters of Chassis/Powertrain.
  • I'm not real familiar with these smaller units but I doubt there is a cap on such a small motor so it would lead me to believe the condenser fan motor is starting to fail. It wasn't the first time you tried firing it up this year was it?

  • Got on roof today and took off ac cover. Had friend turn on ac. Inside blower and compressor came on but not fan on roof. I turned fan and it started working. Has been working for about 6 hours since. Turned off and back on 2 times during that time with no problems. Could it have been just a stuck fan?

I will go with Freezup. Though the coils will not freeze that fast. The sensor (if such is present and in most models it is) is supposed to shut the compressor down BEFORE it freezes.

Option 2.. and just now I'm looking at option 2 (It's just to my right above me) the unit is not working, loss of refrigerant in my case.

I turn it on, it runs for a few mintues (no cold) and then since that same sensor says "Hey, I'm still hot" it shuts down.. COMPLETLY in this case, Blower and compressor both.. Then after a time out it tries again, Same results, New unit at technician, Adapter to mount it not in evidence, I'm going to self-adapt as soon as I can convince tech to put the upper unit on.

Not going to freeze in 5 minutes. Since the Compressor starts and runs for 5 minutes means the capacitor is good. Odds are he has a bad compressor or Compressor overload switch is defective. Doug

  • The fan is set to auto. I have the same problem on shore or generator.
  • Check to see if the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO. If so, the fan will run anytime the A/C is on whether the compressor is running or not.
