Running Generator at Near Max Capacity

Hi, I have a new to me travel trailer. Surprising to me, the WEN 2000 Inverter Generator I have was able to start and run the AC (13500) in the trailer. I have not put an amp clamp to see the actual load, but I suspect it is near the top of the capacity of the generator. What are your opinions of running the generator at near full load for extended times? I have an option to get a Honda EU3000 for a decent price, but I like the small package and light weight of the WEN.
  • Don't worry about it. The genset will have an overload trip.
  • we ran a 13.5 AC for a week in the heat of the day with an EU2000 a couple of years ago. Never had an issue. Don't try and turn anything else on and you should be fine. You still should be at or below your rated run watts. I think our 13.5 was running at about 12 amps

    Chris
  • Thanks for the input. I will go with the WEN for now. I am going to put the amp clamp on it to see the current draw as well as test for voltage drop out of curiosity.
  • As long as you are within the rated power just run it continuous.
It is just a machine. It does not get tired, overworked, or need a lunch break.
  • The starting surge load on it will be quite high getting the AC going, but once they're started some RV AC's will run at little as 1200watts, so you may not be as close to its limits as you think you are, I really wouldn't worry about it, like others have said, it will trip its protection if it goes too high. If you are really concerned though you could buy a kill-a-watt meter and check it out, see exactly what its drawing.
  • Exactly, if the genset can start the AC then running it will be well within the capabilities of the genset as the running current is way lower than startup current.
  • If u can't measure current draw just plug in a 'Kill-0-Watt' meter into any 120 VAC outlet in the camper. Do NOT let the Ac draw the voltage down below 107 VAC. Below that indicates the compressor is drawing LOTS of current and if allowed to run in this condition for more than an hour or so WILL damage the compressor and it will fail within the next week.
