RV Step Limits

Hi:
Just worked on repairing steps on a 2007 View. This set me to wondering how the limits (in and out) are sensed. The reed switch on the door causes changes of direction but does not set the limits. I see no evidence of limit switches. I hope you can help me with this. It is a puzzler to me.
Thanks.
Bob

  • Both Kwikee and LCI(SCS) steps use current limit as the stop. Once the step motor reaches a preset amp draw, the controller cuts the voltage to the motor. The amount of amp is not a concern to me as Kwikee and LCI have never told me that. I have NEVER had a faulty controller that the amp limit was bad. This is why you can park next to a curb or any obstruction and the step will cut off if it cannot reach full extension. This is also why, when you have neglected the lubing of the step linkages, the step only extends or retracts partially. Doug
  • I just modified my older Kwik-step model that had an external control box with a cam operated control system. I ditched the whole motor/controller and replaced with a linear actuator with internal limit switches. Internal limit switches are very common nowadays.

  • Do not notice increase in amperage as it closes but meter might be too slow. Will check this out. Interesting idea and a very good tip.
    Thanks.

Most likely the amp increase. Try putting your leg (or a 2x4 in front of the step when it starts to deploy. It will likely stop when it hits a certain amount of resistance. This is good when you park near a high curb or similar obstruction as it will stop the step from destroying itself.

  • It could be either a current limiter or internal switches in the motor
