- wa8yxmExplorer IIIWhen I needed to make a custom cord for powering my HOUSE off the RV (I installed a proper 30 amp twist lock outlet on the RV.. Breaker fed, along with a pair of TT-30 outlets for my neighbors when needed. Has come in handy on occasion. (long story of a dead generator.. Not mine.
And a proper INLET on the back of my house with a proper transfer panel for essential services (Furnace, Kitchen, Fridge/Freezer, Radios/Televisions. Computers and accessories, Selected (not all) lights) (more later)
I got the cable at an Electrical Supply House.. Every major city has at least one... If Home Depot or Lowes (or Mennards where found) do not have it. Try the local Electrical store.. Where Electricians shop OH, they also had the plugs and sockets.
The promised more.
In my house we had a very short (like six feet) hall.. It had a light we never used. or ALmost never because spillover from the Living Room, bathroom, or Bedrooms lit the hall beyond our needs.
So I left that lamp OFF the E-panel. it was only powerd off the main panel so only Mains power fed it.. When I came home from Church and found Frosty the Air-blown Inflatable Snowman sleeping on the job. (no power) I went to basement, Got the big cord, Plugged outlet end into house inlet and twisted to lock, Uncoiled it as I walked toward RV, Plugged in RV end, Fired up ONAN and once transfer transferred walked back to house,, Back to basement and
CLICK: there was light
CLICK there was HEAT (Furnace)
CLick, click, click and Fridge, Freezer, Microwave Television, Computers, More lights and such.
Washer and Dryer (240 volt) were not on the panel, nor was centeral A/C (240 volt and not on the Main panel either, it had it's own feed).
To do the Master Charge thing:
Transfer switch, as I recall about 300 dollars.. Inlet around 30,, Cord about 100 by the time I finsihed makign it. Installation of transfer switch along with upgrade of main breaker box around a thousand.
Warm Wife: PRICELESS. - Good price. I have paid $4/foot for same 8/3 SOOW 600v
- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerDon't know the price. Shipping versus Home Depot tax. Some folks need to drive quite a distance to Home Despot. Individual decision as to feasibility and worth. This stuff can be pricey online and S.O. wire is better than SOJ or SOO grades. Better insulated.
- Chris_BryantExplorer IIOne place it says 30 ft minimum, just after that it says 100 ft minimum.
I really like the 2/4 cable :) - TodduptonExplorerYes Home Depot has this in stock
