I would just run my converter to provide for 12 volt needs. I might add a maintenance free garden tractor battery to deal with surges, and to be "kind" to the converter.
Taping off one battery is bad news.
There were a few Russian tractors that came in with 24 volt systems. Farmers like their music--so they would tap off one battery. In very short order the battery banks would fail.
How many watts of output is the new fancy pants inverter?
