Sams Club 1000w Black Max Inverter Generator $299

Saw this 1000w (8.3a; 900w continuous, 7.5amps) Black Max inverter generator at Sams Club for $299. Appeared to have a very nice fit & finish. Didn't see any parallel capability, but it did have an Economy Mode switch. Couldn't find any reference to sound level online or at the store. FWIW, the muffler/spark arrestor assembly looked very similar in design to the Honda/Yamaha models. It's powered by a 52cc OHV engine. Assuming it's reasonably quiet, and has enough headroom to power some of the more popular converters, it could potentially be worthy of consideration.

  • I think of these things as "Chew & Spit"

They serve a definite purpose unfortunately in that list is not longevity or robustness.
  • If you're purposely looking for a small inverter generator, take a look also at the Earthquake IG800W. Power-wise it's in-between the much-loved EX650 and the 1000 VA inverter generators, but is by a wide margin the smallest and lightest of the bunch. For battery charging you need to be able to throttle the power converter draw. With a PD9160 the generator maxes out in the low 30 amps of converter output, at sea level and moderate temperature. It's smaller than the 1000 VA inverter generators, and weighs only 20 pounds. Output voltage stability with load changes is very good. Noise-wise it's a bit louder than the eu2000i pushing the same load, and based on forum reports is certainly louder than the EX650. The EX650's big drawback besides low availability is that it's about the same size and weight as the eu2000i. There's no chance of it running a standard circular saw. It does run a 6 amp reciprocating saw fairly well, you just need to not keep the saw heavily loaded for more than a few seconds at a time.

For a user report, I've had an IG800W for about 4 months. It starts and runs well. At home it sits next to an eu2000i. Whenever it will work for the job at hand I choose it over the eu2000i 100% of the time because it's so darn easy to carry around, and to get in and out of the RV storage compartment. Cost is in the $300 ballpark, available at Amazon and a few other outlets.

    Does Sam's Club sell it?

  • Nice price. It will be interesting to find out what the sound levels are.
  • Great price. It's all price vs risk. Some will take abuse beter than others so there are 2 things that I would consider important to do to make it last as long as possible. Number one dont operate at the high end of it's power range. Number two when you are done using it for extended periods, run it out of fuel and put a good shot of seafoam in as it's running out of fuel. This will keep the carb from varnishing. If it has an easy bowl drain all the better but I would still run Seafoam so it goes through the jets. It will not hurt it to have straight seafoam hitting it and sitting in the bowl.

A Honda or a Yammie would probably be most tolerant of running at peak output but that's why they are far more money. Just mentioning for other newer folks.
