Hoping that someone has the knowledge that I don't, maybe someone that has had the same issue. I purchased a used Lance slide in that came with a WINEGARD Digital Satellite System with an RS-1000 Antenna. I am a DIRECTV subscriber and I have a Model H25-700 receiver box but have read on the net that the two are not compatible. I called customer support at WINEGARD and they also said the same thing. After that I called DIRECTV and talked to a rep for some time who was very helpful. He said that I might want to try the H25-700 box, go into settings and turn off the HD. If that is not a winner, it sounds like I will need a D-12 receiver - BUT I don't need another monthly charge added to my DIRECTV bill. If I go this route, can the box be activated as needed? Should I replace my HD box at home with this D-12 for a secondary TV?

I don't know the specifics of the various DTV receivers, but I do know the RS-1000 dish will only pull in the DTV SD channels, not the HD channels.

D-12 receive is what you need. It's $6.00 per month for the xtra receiver and you can leave it in the camper. You can suspend your entire account 2x in 12 months and up to 6 months total. Don't think you can just suspend one receiver.

Have exactly same problem. From numerous conversations with sat TV folks including the directv RV section people at directv, the only solution I have found, short of replacing the satalite antenna on the motor home is to use the standard definition receiver in the coach and pay $6.00 per month for only the time you activate the service when using the RV. Just haven't figured out how to get directv HDTV with out a new traveler sat dish. Everyone says cannot do.

My tripod is a standard roof mount modified for portable no tools use. The tripod cost about $20 and the added hardware about $15. I use the DishPointer app and on my smartphone and a signal strength meter for aiming.

I want to thank everyone for their ideas. My options seem to be

-Get a D12 box that would not be used for most of the time
-Spending very BIG $$$ and upgrade the Satellite antenna

or - this is what I am aiming at

Using a home type dish on a tripod!

I have a Direct Dish that is available and will just need to make or purchase a tripod

Thing is, the handwriting is on the wall for SD on DirecTV. They have not yet said when SD is going away, but at some point it will. I opted for the tripod mounted 5lnb dish. Got the extra dish/mount/lnb off ebay for $50, and tripod from tv4rv.com for about $150. I take one of my less used boxes from the house, and use it in the trailer during the summer.

Works great, and after setting up a few times, can get zero'd in pretty quickly.

I am just the opposite, been w/ DTV D-12 rec for 15 yrs. Once in a while get tempted to go HD, but everytime I read on these forums what a PITA it is, my D-12 is going to stay a whole bunch longer. If I want HD, I can switch the D-12 off, and I get OTA HD, but I don't even bother,.....its not worth it !

Plain and simple, you need to invest big money if you want an automated system to acquire an HD Directv signal for RV use, need to decide if HD is worth it..

I've been setting up a Directv dish ever since the service went nationwide 2 decades ago, makes setting up our tripod HD Directv sat dish a breeze when we installed a couple of flatscreens in our rig several years ago.

Hopefully in the future there will be more economical automated choices for Directv in HD, but for now you have to drop major coin, go with a manual set-up, or forego HD altogether and settle for SD which is not an option for us.
