Satellite

Can anyone offer suggestions about satellite internet. How well does it work? Of course what's the cost and with who? I purchased a new coach that is satellite ready but I'm sure which way is the best way to turn now.

I can use smartphone for a hotspot but the data charges are getting out of hand. What happened to our unlimited data plans w/the phone providers?

Thanks, Any help is greatly appreciated

Not true. Mobil Satellite Services (one of the vendors you listed) provides sat service for some HughesNet dishes.

Their Internet Access 100 plan is $79.99/month + you must keep the service 18 months.

You can get rooftop automatic dishes through eBay or www.oregonrv.net.

But unless you plan to be far removed from any cell tower (Alaska? Canada?), I'd stick with your cell data plan.
  • We were on Hughes Net for almost 7 years, both mobile in the RV and fixed antenna at home and dropped it. When they went to their New Gen4, access slowed to a crawl on their basic setup, if we were able to get anything at all, and even contacting Hughes directly got nothing but excuses and evasions. We finally dropped it completely (anyone want to buy a 1 meter auto dish or fixed mount dish cheap?) and went to a Verizon Jetpack. The unit cost me $50 and I got a $50 rebate and 5 gigs is $50 a month. MUCH faster and more reliable than Hughes and coverage is very good. We boondock at a number of out of the way places in the southwest and have had no problems so far. This summer will tell as we're taking it to Alaska but based on stories I've heard, I expect few problems. When we ditched Hughes I checked with our provider for an alternative and a minimal Wild Blue setup was around $8,000 with a monthly cost of about $150 and up.

    8. Can I put this system on a boat or in an RV?
HughesNet Home and Professional service is available for non-mobile (fixed) locations. To receive mobile high-speed Internet service, please contact one of the following Value Added Service providers:
    Mobil Satellite Technologies www.mobilsat.com 1-757-312-8300
    Ground Control www.groundcontrol.com 1-800-773-7168
Plus satellite internet isn't cheaper, in fact it's more expensive and the speeds aren't consistent.
here's a link to an article about satellite internet that might help explain: http://www.your-rv-lifestyle.com/RV-internet-access.html
  • Good thread referenced above.
One thing to note, "Satellite Ready" means for TV satellite dish, not internet.
