Without knowing the application, there's no good way to really review pros/cons of any given load switching technology. Historically I have used transistors for DC loads and relays for AC loads, because I've never had need for phase control of AC loads.
Recently, I've found an application where phase control might be handy, so I've started educating myself on solid state switching of AC loads.
