Just what kind of batteries are available in Death Valley? Seems a very strange restriction to place on yourself?
I was more thinking the second battery in my truck can be used in a pinch as well as the battery in my Jeep (which goes inside the toy hauler with my motorcycles etc). I don't expect to run into too many auto-parts stores :)
If you roll your own lithium packs, there are plenty of solder free options now. Keep a box of quality 18650 cells on standby should you somehow damage ones in operation.
Any good quality cell from Panasonic (Tesla), LG, Sanyo or Samsung, charged to 50% should have roughly 10 year shelf life. Try that with a lead acid.
If you damage your pack so severely it can't be field repaired, time to reevaluate procedures while running on backup source such as generator.
