If the OP balances his batteries properly and has a bms system in place and operating with proper fail safes (Over voltage, Under voltage, Over current, Over temperature, Under temperature, Ground fault) the system should shut down and he can correct the issue without causing battery damage. Carrying extra battery seems redundant.
