Should batteries be disconnected when on shore power?

My rvs have Intellipower something or other converter chargers with fancy battery charging...

Should I be disconnecting the house batteries when on shore power for extended periods?

Or do the batteries provide a "cushion" for starting 12v furnace motors etc.?

    1. NO
    2. Batteries provide an EVEN current for best 12 volt appliance operation.
  • The only time mine is unplugged, is when it is hooked to the truck.
  • Always leave the batteries connected. Depending on the TYPE Converter you have, it may require a battery to be connected. Regardless, having a LOAD(Battery) connected will make the Power converter operate better and MOST converters do NOT have the POWER to operate slides or Jack systems. They may work on Converter only, but you put a heavy strain on the converter. IF you have a Inverter/Charger instead of a Converter, you CANNOT disconnect the Coach batteries. They are wired DIRECT to the Inverter/Charger. Your battery disconnect system if you have one will not disconnect the batteries when you have an Inverter/Charger. An Inverter/Charger CANNOT be operated without a LOAD (Battery) connected. Doug

Leave my battery hooked up, the camper recharges the battery.

We usually are just weekend camping, so I don't know about extended camping with hookups.
  • My batteries are shut off via a cut off switch, when I'm hooked up to shore power. I've never had a problem doing this in the last 37 years or so. I turn them back on about a day before we unhook from shore power.
  • 1. no
    2. Some equipment (slides, power jacks, etc.) draw too much current for the converter to operate.

Is that a shouted NO to both questions?
