LtR2, go for it. It will be a big improvement, and we can learn from your experience with it. I think a hydrometer and the clamp multimeter will get you in business, but the other things are nice to have. Once you start dicking around with this stuff, you soon accumulate lots of testers, meters, and the like.

I like this stuff because I like learning new concepts, solving puzzles, and optimizing things. All of those can get out of hand. :) I do see some of the perfectionism (optimizing) in some frequent posters on these topics. It's a double edge sword for sure. It's enjoyable up until the point where you lose sleep over something like battery charging. That's when it's time to pick your answer and get on with life. And tell us later how it is working, so we can second guess you to a death by a thousand cuts. Truthfully, there is no possible solution that won't bring that on. Just look at the answers in any one page of this thread! :)
Another way of looking at that is, there is more than one good solution.
