I'm strongly leaning toward the Megawatt S-400-15. Compared to the other 3 on my list the only major draw backs I can discern from the comments made on this thread are the difficulty in setting voltage and the lower amps , but for a difference in price of around $145, and given my financial situation, I think I can tolerate those. I do regard it as a probably temporary solution, for 4-5 months, adding to the attractiveness of the small $ investment.
For monitoring equipment I plan to have a temperature correcting baster hydrometer, digital ammeter/voltmeter, amp clamp meter, and a multimeter. Anything else I should have?
I hope to order no later than tomorrow. I'll post the final decision.
Worst case scenario, if your pot goes to pot, you can always go look up Mex Wanderers thread on a 10 turn screw pot replacement for when the original potentiomter goes bad, and remove the old one and solder a new $5 or $10 10 screw pot in. Or even a 270* screw pot, if you get the ohms resistance correct on the replacement. The voltage setting is not difficult if you add in the 50 amp shunt and digital volt amp meter, as shown on my S-350-12. Available on Ebay for under $10, makes it very, very easy to adjust the voltage right the first time.
