Hi Mike,
I use Hall Effect ammeters. They are a "hard to find" item. The ones (one for alternator and one for the OEM converter) I use are limited to 70 amps--but that in general is plenty.
My inverter/charger does let me know how many amps it is sending to the battery bank.
