I don't know where you got your info about anything home built won't be worth anything. As posted earlier, I built a 24x8 concession trailer. I used it for 12 years and sold it for 2 and 1/5 times what it cost to build. If built well and kept well it WILL be worth something.
If you say so. However a concession trailer or a construction trailer or any other kind of commercial trailer is a lot different than an RV. There just isn't a whole lot of people looking for a used RV built by Tom, Dick or Harry. They shop manufacturers.
This is meant to be more of a home that you don't move often, not a weekend cruiser. I estimate it will be worth $50,000 once completed. It costs $75,000 to have a contractor build it based off the plans I am using.
Considering the major manufacturers sell larger travel trailers with slides etc. for much less and you can buy a tricked out park model twice the size for about the same money, I don't think your homebuilt trailer is going to be worth anywhere near that much. Hopefully, you are building it as a labor of love, because it is not going to be a good investment.
It is definitely not an investment and I would agree with your logic and statements. The reason we didn't go the park model route is we want to be able to move it with a pickup and the reason we didn't go with a travel trailer is we wanted something similar to a home with a full kitchen that we could live in comfortably full-time. I think you will see there is value in Tiny Homes on Wheels. It won't be fully homemade as I am have a contractor build the shell and I bought a professional built 28' trailer with three 7k lb axles and trailer brakes. Here is the link to the plans we are using:
http://tinyhousebuild.com/I think once you look at the link you will be pleasantly surprised and will understand what we are trying to do. It is yet to be determined the resale market of Tiny Homes On Wheels but I feel there will be value there that depreciates at a lesser rate than Travel Trailers but that is yet to be determined. That being said we are not doing it for the investment but rather the benfits of having less stuff and paying off debts. It should be a fairly efficient rig.
