If you want to make a significant improvement consider Li batteries. Very expensive, but much lighter, can take a monster of a charge with no absorbtion phase, discharging to 20% is not a big deal.
The downside is that you can't recharge them if their temperature is below freezing. Which, admittedly, isn't a problem for some people, but can be for others.
