Is that still the case? I was scornful of the automatic chokes in their first few decades, and purposefully chose a car with a manual one, but modern cars seem to do ok.
Although... my van does need a heavy foot on the pedal, to start in the mornings...
No longer the case, now they are computer controlled and they don't even use a choke. The computer directs the injection gas directly into the cylinder. The old automatic choke was the bane of many a cold morning starts. Worked great for about the first year. After that it was******shoot.
