Heck, my first cut off valve was a 1/2 inch IPT PVC ball valve,, that works just like your garden hose save for one thing... No adapters needed, just one close nipple.
I had the burst of off-temp water problem with it though so switched to a proper shower cut off valve that drip, drip, drips.. That solved the problem for me.. Exact opposite of yours.
