I don't use the brights for signalling at night, as they may blind the poor trucker. At night, I turn my headlights OFF-ON-OFF-ON with a half-second pause at each step to signal that it's clear to change lanes. I think that's a bit less jarring.
During the day, I'll use the same pattern with the "flash-to-pass" feature on the turn signal stalk.
