The blurbs say they started in the 70s with the military so the battery could be shot up and not leak acid. They were not very good as batteries until around 2009, when somebody improved the whole idea and that is what we have now.
They are not like Gel cells or AGMs or Li batts; they have their own set of pros and cons. Happens that Si fits my intended use for how it acts.
