By chance did you look/feel for bronze bushing play on the pinion gear shaft ends plates? Curious if they are worn or not.
Keep at it, your gaining. The cross shaft telescoping being froze up, not surprising especially if the shaft assembly is outside the frame where road splash can get at it easier causing more corrosion. I was shocked mine came apart. For sure grease or anti seize it well when you put it back together.
