slide awnings help

Would like to order slide toppers/awnings for our Outback. We have 2 slides. Neither slide has a topper. I believe I have figured out how to measure for them however when ordering some ads are not very clear if they come with the hardware? Is there any kits that come complete? Rollers brackets bolts etc. When I order I just want to get everything I need.

Also when you screw the upper rail into the fiberglass wall of the trailer are you suppose to try and screw into the wall studs? If so how do you find them or do you just screw them into fiberglass wall?
  • Each manufacturer has strict guidelines for sizing and measuring- you really need to figure out which brand and style, then find out what they call for. An example- A&E calls for an 84" cover for your smaller slideout (74-79 3/4").
  • You'll want it to extend a bit past the edge of the roof to keep water and leaves from blowing under at an angle.

The last one I put on extended almost to the edges of the flange and seems to work better than previous installations that extended just a bit past the edge of the slide roof.

The awning rail is screwed about every 6" and you don't need to worry about hitting framing. Carefree's come with the awning rail and all necessary screws for it. You'll need some butyl tape to seal the screws.

I've never installed a A&E but for a Carefree you will need to order the end brackets separate as they come in a short or long version. There are notes on the mfgr web page to help you determine which you will need. I use Silicone to seal the end bracket screws.

You can install the mounting brackets and rail easily by yourself, but I need help sliding the topper material into the awning slot.

    Good luck with the task.
  • Ok, I have the slides measured but confused on which awning to order..We will start with the small slide first. The roof is 72" wide but the slide itself is 78" wide with the 3" flange going all the way around. Now when I look for a awning I see 78" wide and 72" wide awnings. Which one do I order?
  • Yes..I have looked there..only able to find one that really goes from start to finish..most are awning replacements.
  • you can go to U tube and look up installing slide awnings. they give you a step by step info on the matter.
  • measure your wall edge to edge.A&e awnings have a nice bracket called a quick mount backet get the tall ones.
as a note the carefree of colorado 2 are now dicontinued so you may not get the correct parts
  • Well not sure even what brand I am purchasing yet for one..and another is I will be installing myself so I thought I would check here..
  • Why not just call the outfit you are going to order from and ask.
Best way to get correct/straight answer.
