You need to create a foundation.. Some type of cloth you lift and glue to the underside of the carpet that is not damaged... Then you glue the "patch" to the cloth. Beyond that I can not help much.. You need a foundation cloth that is both thin (So you don't have a bump) and strong enough to survive the slide in/out function.
