Slider Fuse Keeps Blowing

I searched the forum and didn't find a similar message.

Since buying my new Springdale in July, we have blown the 30 amp fuse to the slide twice while operating it. Both times it blew while we were stopped and parked and nothing else was running. No one was in the slide, and no heavy weight was in it. Just normal easy operation. The last time this happened was Sunday while at the dump station. Thankfully it was within a half inch from fully in when it happened since we didn't have a spare fuse. We had a two mile city drive to get back home.

Is this normal, or should I look to a cause? Thanks!

  • Thanks for all the great comments. I didn't think this was normal, but needed confirmation from more experienced people.

Although I could probably troubleshoot this, I would rather set up a warranty service appointment. The dealership is 2 hours away, so we'll call and get this on the service record and plan to stop in for service when we travel to Yellowstone and the Tetons in late Spring.

    Thanks!
  • If it only happens with slide coming in and not when going out, suspect the rocker switch wiring or switch contact point innards.

The switch has a complicated way to swap the wires from it to the motor as pos or neg so it reverses which way the motor turns the gearing.

If it works one direction but not the other then there is nothing wrong with the rest of the circuitry, but it has to be inside the switch for the IN contacts. The fuse doesn't blow right away but after the slide has been moving for a time? Maybe the short takes a minute to develop as the wire exposure warms up.

Should be a warranty item on a new trailer, but changing out the switch is not that hard. ISTR five wires.
  • NO it is not normal.......

Any fuse that blows indicates there is a problem.

Low supply voltage, short, high amp load, bad connections etc.

Need to DC supply voltage, check wiring/connections, then motor amp draw

Blowing a fuse is never normal...

Find the cause - sticky mechanical connections for the slide slide, low voltage at the motor due to undersized wire or bad connections, faulty motor, binding, operating the slide when not level, etc, etc...
