Don, I am not convinced that Li really wants to charge fast. One of the purposes of BMS is to prevent this, by limiting both current and battery temperature. Charging 500WH 48V battery, ~40AH in 12V lingo, at 3A current, i.e. C/13, would be normal.
Edit - PS:
On the 2nd thought... my math must be flawed and 500WH 48V battery is really 10.5 AH. Then 3A current would be 0.3C. This is 3 hours charging from 0 to 100%. So... you are right. Li batteries favor generators and motorhomes.
