Solar Charge Cotroller

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Trace 20 am MPPT Solar Charge Controller from Amazon.

I have two Sears Group 31 Platinum (same as Odyssey) AGM 12v batteries fora total of 200 amp hours.

A few items have raised my eyebrows since I opened the manual.

One, it has only settings for GEL, FLOODED and SEALED....no setting for AGM.

The charge rate on the Trace controller is:

Boost (Absorption): 14.4 for Sealed, 14.6 for Flooded, 14.2 for Gel
Float: 13.8 for everything
Equalization: 14.6 for Sealed, 14.8 for Flooded, none for Gel

From what I have read, both the Bulk and Float (especially) rates seem high.

Too high?

Go with gel to avoid equalization

X2! If you plan on keeping that controller. Avoid equalization as that usually means to raise the Volts in order to bubble/stir the liquid in a flooded battery. This is a deliberate overcharge and surely the Volts will EXCEED the AGM's specs.

Flooded will be ok if equalization can be turned off.

    Or consider a TS-MPPT-30.

Now just what do you suppose a "sealed" is ?? Every sealed battery I have around here, is AGM.

If AGMs are that fragile, (which they are not) that's another reason to not have them.
If I was to put an AGM in my car, what then ?? It going to charge same as any other battery, and the warranty is going to be just as good as the MFG says it is.

Your assumption would be incorrect RJ...

Both my 2 VW Touaregs, 2012 and 2013 and my 2014 Passat have AGM batteries. If I plug in through my diagnostic OBD II port with Ross-Tech VCDS software, the voltage setting for various batteries is indeed programmable for AGM or Flooded Lead Acid Cell.

I can also program the voltage of my head lights and taillights to lower voltages in .1V increments, depending on if I want more brightness or more bulb life out of my bulbs. Factory setting for my headlights is 12.8V, I've changed it to 13.2V on the 2014 Passat, for better visibility.

Technology and what is done with computers and programming, on your car, is constantly changing.

Despite my wishes, my 2014 Passat is tracked via GPS at all times through a new device called Car-net, something I never wanted. Think of it as a constantly activated Lo jack, whether you want it or not, by Volkswagen of America.

So you were the guy following me the other night, lol. Just kidding, I'm slowly getting used to the Xenon bulbs in my rearview.

FWIW, I have two banks of batteries (6v GC2 and AGM). For the last 6mos. they have been charged by a Morningstar MPPT-15 charge controller with temp compensation while in storage. The two banks are connected in parallel and charge voltage has gone as high as 14.9V on very cold days. In the next week or so I'll check the SG on the 6V's, along with water level and standing voltage. I'm pretty sure that I'll find everything is as it should be. The Morningstar is programmable and I have it set at 14.6 absorb and 13.6 float. When I start using the trailer, this summer, I'll be separating banks and fiddling with voltages to baby the 6V's. The AGM bank is very tolerable with voltage and no limit on amperage (within reason).
