Solar Panel Glass Protection?

Theoretically speaking, if a person were to fasten 1/2" worth of clear poly-carbonate sheet upon a panel how much energy loss percentage wise an be expected? And is the loss constant or linear according to sun position?

Mex, automotive Lexan sheets have protective cover against "minor" scratches, according to specs. Don't know about yellowing. Lexan is one of brand names for polycarbonate, you'll probably find similar but cheaper polycarb sheets that are not called Lexan.

Why are you worried about glass - flying sand scratching?
  • I think this is almost a "what if" question. They use tempered glass but similar to a windshield, it may crack if a stone gets thrown up from the road. That would be rare for a roof top installation.
  • Plus as the cover yellows the effect will continue to change; theoretically, of course.
