Solar Panel Knob Fasteners

I just now got around to installing the knob fasteners in place of the bolts, to make adding the tilt bars a wrenchless task.
I am assuming other installations are similar to this.
Any problem w/ these knob fasteners working loose on the hiway ?

  • That is a great idea.

However I have 1/4-20 tamper resistant bolts with a special torx head to make it more difficult to remove the bolts. I have never had one vibrate out. .

With a 400 watt solar system, I no longer need to tilt them, and I am getting to old to go up there anymore.

  • Good to hear !
Mine are 1/4-20 thread. The frames are backed up w/ 1/4" thick FM 1 1/4" x 4" long, pop riveted to the inside of the frames for a total of 3/8" thread thickness. So it should be good to go.
    Thanks.
  • Nope, we've got 8 on each panel so we can raise it on any axis. I use an item called a RIV NUT on the panels as a threaded insert that the thumb wheels go into. 32,000 miles on the 2013 panel setup and about 25,000 on a previous Allegro Bus without a hitch. Our setup has experienced multiple trips to Alaska and I've never found one loose.

Thumb screw won't make it stick in there better than a regular head screw if both have same thread. More dense thread, like 1/4x28 instead of 1/4x20, would make a difference.
