No. You connect + from the 1st panel to a looong #10 MC4 wire to controller, and - from the last panel to another long #10 MC4 wire to controller. No combiner box is required. The beauty of series connection is that you have a low current, and therefore can use same #10 MC4 wire as between the panels. Alright, not "the same wire", because panels normally have a thinner #12 MC4 pigtail, but connectors are the same MC4 and #10 is just slightly thicker than #12. Very easy.
The drawback of series connection is - more issues with shading.
