Did you test your system with an air gap of 4 inches under the panels? Did you measure the temperature of the panels? Did you check the makers specifications for voltage loss per degree C? If not, how do you know you did not experience the heat effect?

An interesting point. How did you come up with the 20%? I did not experience this heat effect with my mppt controller and 200 watt panels on my boat that is made out of fiberglass which does not distribute heat.
