Well...It seems I had two issues. The fuse holder I had going from the solar controller to the battery was defective and intermittent. The battery was not getting any charge from the controller. As I moved wires around I saw the trimetric go from negative current to positive. Replaced the fuse holder and now the trimetric is showing positive current from the panel.
But I still have an issue with the little meter. Here is a quick drawing on how it is wired:

The voltage always shows true. But amps reads 0.0
When I simply check amps on the + and - lead connected to the solar controller, the entire mini panel goes blank. I get a good reading on the VOM of between 3-4 amps (Camper is partially shaded by trees). When I remove the test leads, the mini panel comes back on and the amps are reading perfectly.....for about 20-30 seconds then it counts down back to 0.0. Strange, so it works once I short the +/- leads from the panel through the VOM. But it only reads current for 20-30 seconds.

I installed it the way I did based on input from some friends that know more about this than I do....
