When I simply check amps on the + and - lead connected to the solar controller, the entire mini panel goes blank. I get a good reading on the VOM of between 3-4 amps (Camper is partially shaded by trees).
I can't understand whether you are trying to use some additional meter or a multimeter, or both. You can measure current with Trimetric. Cheap little meter - whatever you mean - should work same way as any multimeter, and measure current wherever you connect it.
You should NOT measure current between + and - across the controller. If battery is connected, you will short the battery, and if battery is not connected, you can damage the controller. Forget about that additional meter - especially if you are not sure how to measure what - and try connecting Trimetric properly.
