Can someone give a direct link to a good system that will work?
Neither he or I have any idea on where to order a kit.
There is no such thing as a good kit for full-time living.
Tell him to start with panels. I would aim at 2*250W or 2*280W. And Tracer 40 MPPT controller aka solar charger - this one you can get on Amazon etc.
These big panels should better be purchased locally, they are (relatively) expensive to ship but the total cost with shipping could be less than 5 or 6 smaller 100W panels. Home Depot usually have 100W ~$100 on sale, free shipping. 6*100W is more work to mount but could be easier to fit on a small roof, if 2*280W won't fit.
MC4 cables are cheap. Included 40ft (kit in the link) makes for 20ft run to controller (which in turn has to be near batteries), - may or may not be enough. Included single-screw brackets I'm not in the mood to comment on. For semi-permanent living 360W is marginal, anyway. Unless he is stationary and can deal with (minor if this is occasionally) complications of tilted panels. Tilted to South 360W will work to ~460W in Northern states.
You can't have too much solar.
